Over on GoG.com they just posted a big update to the classic game “Prince of Persia – The Sands of Time”. This 2003 release was a critical and commercial success, with its balletic combat, fast action platforming and superb sound and visuals, it was a real treat no matter what platform you played it on.
The game is now a worthy addition to GoG.com’s Preservation Program, meaning it should now work perfectly on modern PCs. To this end, GoG have developed a custom wrapper for the game that fixes frame pacing issues, allows for widescreen and even ultra-wide resolutions and much more. Thanks to this new development we have updated our old Prince of Persia – The Sands of Time guide. The GoG.com release fixes most problems but, if you like to game on your PC from a couch rather than a desk, our guide still has some handy hints on how you can setup your controller. Some questions remain regarding the games audio, which used the now defunct EAX standard, though its difficult to say if this works exactly as it did on period accurate hardware without having a machine at hand to test with.
If you’ve never played this classic game before, now is a great time to give it a try. The sands of time haven’t been particularly cruel this release and while it doesn’t look cutting edge any more, its graphical style holds up well and its excellent gameplay and story telling are timeless.
