Thanks to the efforts of a dedicated and skilled fan community on the website “OldUnreal” one of the greatest first person arena shooter games is now preserved, updated and available for anyone anywhere to play for free.
Unreal Tournament 2004 is regarded by many as the pinnacle of arena shooters. Upon its release the game received unanimous critical acclaim and would go on to win many Game of the Year awards. The game leaves a lasting legacy to this day, still managing to maintain a player base despite many more modern alternatives. Now, anyone with a Windows, Linux or macOS machine can download and play the game entirely for free, including all the online elements. This is entirely legal and done with Epic Games permission.
Not only does this new release give you the full classic game but it patches and updates it too. Patch 3374, the first public patch for Unreal Tournament 2004 in over 20 years, brings a slew of improvements and upgrades, including 64 bit executables, a new SDL back-end (for Linux and macOS), a new renderer (Windows, Linux, and macOS) and other bug fixes and improvements. The patch is also available for existing installations of the game too. If updating an existing installation you should follow the additional steps to update your ut2004.ini file, see our updated game guide for more information.
They really don’t make them like this any more!
If you’ve never tried Unreal Tournament 2004 there really is no excuse not to now that the game is available for free. Younger gamers might scoff at the idea of playing a 22 year old competitive shooter but it is a fact that there simply isn’t anything quite like UT2004 around any more. Imagine a competitive, online FPS without battle passes, without levelling up, without customisable load-outs and of course without any loot boxes or paid upgrades. As bizarre as that may sound, that’s exactly what Unreal Tournament 2004 was like. You purchased the game once and all content and updates after that were free. Need a different vehicle or gun for a modified server?, no problem, the game will just download that for you, for free. Such a game would be highly unlikely to be green-lit now, as it simply wouldn’t make the kinds of money that games like Fortnite can make.
Modern shooters can still be great fun, of course, but they play so much differently to classic arena shooters. More a “Millennial” or “Gen X” shooter than a so called “Boomer” shooter, UT2004 is all about momentum and speed. Characters move and turn at lightning pace, and can jump and dodge off walls. The game is not particularly beginner friendly, though there’s a full single player campaign you can practise on. There’s no levelling up system so you either improve by practising or you don’t. Every match starts players on a level footing. Being such an old game, even getting a competitive advantage with a fast PC is pretty much impossible now given that any modest PC from the last decade can run the game easily.
So, while gamers of my generation may have opinions on this title that are clouded by nostalgia, if you’re a younger gamer looking for something different, don’t overlook this classic. It might not replace or eclipse the likes of Fortnite, Overwatch or Call of Duty but it could still prove to be an entertaining and engaging alternative to those modern titles.
